Sally Wainwright’s Riot Women has been confirmed to return for a second series after a smash-hit initial run.

The comedy-drama, which follows a group of menopausal women as they channel their anger and rage into a rock band, launched in October – with 5.4million people tuning in over the first 28 days.

Sally Wainwright, creator, writer, lead director and executive producer, said of the news: “Oh, this is where the fun really starts! We’ve all been so deeply moved by the huge, overwhelming,  joyous, emotional response to series one, and now we’re able to take the Riot Women extravaganza onto the next level!

“We hope you’ll all join us on the series two rollercoaster!”

First launching on BBC iPlayer, the series also aired on BBC One, ending its run on 16th November.

During the first series, viewers watched as Beth (Joanna Scanlan), Kitty (Rosalie Craig), Holly (Tamsin Greig), Jess (Lorraine Ashbourne) and Yvonne (Amelia Bullmore) came together to create a punk rock band for a local talent show.

But what starts out as a bit of fun soon becomes an important outlet for the five women from their every day lives, which come with their own complications and troubles.

The release date for the second series is yet to be confirmed.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, said: “Riot Women has resonated with millions of BBC viewers so I’m over the moon that we get to go again. An enormous thank you goes to Sally, Roanna, the team at Drama Republic and the dream cast and crew. Riot Women has made people laugh, cry, think and connect with others – what more could we ask for… Bring on the next chapter!”

Riot Women series one is available now on BBC iPlayer.
